Mouse Plague Devastates Farms in Western and South Australia
Farms in both Western and South Australia are facing a major problem in the form of a mouse plague that is destroying recently planted crops, and adding to the stress faced by farmers financially and psychologically. The current situation is a result of an unusually good season where there was plenty of grain produced and remained in the fields. Summer rainfall resulted in fresh crop growth and consequently, mice have multiplied in numbers to about 8,000 to 10,000 per hectare, way above the plague threshold figure of 800. All of this is happening while farmers face problems in the form of increased prices of fertilizers and fuels as a result of the war being waged against Iran by America and Israel.
